Scripps National Spelling Bee
Speller No. 134, Sophia Noel Hoffman

Jackson-Clay County Spelling Bee Collaborative, Kansas City, Missouri

Highland Park Elementary School, Lee's Summit,

Sophia’s favorite spelling bee moment is facing off against Ellen Degeneres’s famed executive producer Andy Lassner while appearing on the first ever Ellen DeGeneres Show spelling bee. Sophia was a finalist in the never-ending 2013 Jackson-Clay County Spelling Bee that captured the media’s attention last year after 66 rounds and 27 tie-breaker rounds, which landed her in second place and in the interview seat for outlets including CNN and NPR. That wasn’t her first time as the center of attention, though. Sophia has starred in multiple Christmas musical programs and performs with the Heart of America Dance Center. Her performance schedule keeps Sophia busy outside of school, where she enjoys history and science. One of her favorite historical figures is Princess Diana of Wales. Even with her knack for performance and excellence in history, Sophia sees herself working in science in the future and would like to study to become an orthopedic surgeon. Sophia's sister, Jordan, competed in the Bee from 2010–2012, tying for eighth place in 2012.
